How much does a tow cost in Palm Beach County?

By Jahnard “Jah” McDonald — owner-operator, Save Ital Towing, Boynton Beach

The short answer: a standard light-duty tow in Palm Beach County costs $125 flat for the hook-up plus your first 5 miles, then $5 per mile after that — that’s our published rate, and it’s the price you pay. Roadside fixes (jump start, flat tire, fuel delivery) run $95 flat. Police-ordered tows are capped by the county at $188 + $7.50/mile — consent tows like ours cost less.

What does a typical tow actually cost here?

Most local tows are short. A Boynton Beach to Delray Beach tow runs about 6–8 miles — with us that’s $130–$140 total. Boynton to West Palm Beach is roughly 12–15 miles: $160–$175. The number is knowable before the truck rolls, and any company that won’t give it to you on the phone is planning to negotiate on the roadside, where you have no leverage.

What makes a tow cost more?

Distance is the main one — every mile past the first five adds $5. Recovery work is the other: if your car is in sand, mud, or a ditch and needs a winch before it can be loaded, that’s recovery (from $150), quoted on the call before we pull. Heavy or oversized vehicles may also change the number — we confirm before dispatch, never on scene. What should not make it cost more: nighttime, weekends, rain, or how stuck you sound on the phone.

What about police-ordered and impound tows?

Those are priced differently — and they’re capped by law. Palm Beach County’s maximum rates for a police-directed Class A tow are $188 plus $7.50 per mile (FY 2026), a private-property impound is capped at $151 flat, and outdoor storage at $31 per day after the first 6 hours. Florida’s Turnpike publishes its own maximum-rate schedule for authorized wrecker operators. If a non-consent tow bill exceeds the county caps, you have grounds to dispute it with PBC Consumer Affairs.

How do I get an exact price?

Two ways. Use the instant tow calculator — type where the car is and where it’s going, and it computes the real driving distance and your exact total. Or call (754) 308-8790 and you’ll have the number before we hang up. The quote is the invoice — if the scope changes on scene, you hear about it before we touch the car.

How do I avoid overpaying for a tow?

  • Get the total price before the truck is dispatched — a legitimate operator can always quote it.
  • Ask if the quote includes mileage, hook-up, and fuel — ours is one number, all-in.
  • Beware “starting at $50” ads — that number rarely survives contact with your actual location.
  • For non-consent tows, know the county caps above — and get an itemized receipt.
  • Pay on scene by card, tap, or cash and keep the receipt — many roadside plans reimburse members.

Know your price before you call anyone.
